Domain names are Digital Property

The best way to think of a domain name is as a piece of digital property. It’s a “First Come, First Served” type of thing. As time goes on there are less and less of them available and it’s getting hard and hard to find a short easy to remember domain which is key when registering one.

NobodyWantsALongDomainName.com as a their website URL. You want something that’s easy for the end user to type and remember. Something that’s catchy helps as well but in the end you don’t have many options since most great domain names are either taken or for sale at crazy aftermarket prices.

That’s not to say you can’t stake your own claim and still find a decent domain name but it’s getting harder and harder to find a good one.

One important thing is to find a domain name where you can find the same name available on popular social media platforms like facebook, instagram and twitter. Many small ecommerce websites are relying heavily on social platforms for sales like facebook since advertising on their platform can reach tons of people instantly and help garner a decent amount of sales quickly.

Now if your goal is to create a mobile app you may not care too much about getting a good domain name as your focus is mostly on User Experience, App Store Rankings and Reviews. Of course you want a simple short name for your app but most mobile apps get away with getting a lousy TLD like a .io instead of the widely popular .com because their focus isn’t a Google Search Ranking but rather an App Store Ranking. It’s also much easier to get your Mobile App name in less popular TLD’s because practically every single word in the Alphabet is taking in .com form.

So it really depends on what you plan to have built and what you plan to do with it in regards to what direction you may want to go. But your main goal is to provide a useful app or website that users are addicted to using and using often for long periods of time.
